Daddy Buttons

Many of you know that the anniversary of my father's death was this week. It's been one year and I miss him everyday. I have many of his old things and I like to incorporate them into what I do.

I also love to make things to wear on the show floor at CHA. Here's something that I put together that uses some old buttons from some of my father's uniforms. I love it!! ...and yes, another piece of him I can carry around with me. xoxo

I did crochet these flowers.... which reminds me. There will be a crochet class this Thursday Feb 2 at 6:30pm in the studio. I will be teaching people how to create crocheted flowers, stars and hearts with yarn OR baker's twine (student's choice) to add to your cards or layouts, etc. $15 includes supplies. Let me know if you'd like to come. .... but this necklace is MINE! :) ...just sayin!

Inspired by Classes...

I love it when people come in to the studio show me what they've been working on inspired by what I've taught them in a class or on ustream.tv.

Since I've been busy working on CHA projects that I can't post yet, I thought I'd share one of these "inspired works" with you.

This Happy Spring card was made by Wanda and was inspired by this month's Technique of the Month class - creating your own styrofoam stamp (in this case, the tulip), stamping on shrink plastic, shrinking and creating some fun embellishments. How cute is this?

Thanks for sharing this with me and the blog reader's Wanda!! Love it!

Hi ALL! I've been busy, busy, busy creating samples for the upcoming CHA Show in Anaheim at the end of the month. I wish I can share them with you but that will have to wait! All good things....right? *smile*

Creating Fun Magnets & Using Resin too

Thank you everyone for dropping by and spending a fun evening with me on my USTREAM broadcast. Loved having you all there chatting and participating -- And I loved how these turned out BUT ... I think I might make some more and dome these babies with the resin because, there are a couple of imperfections that I'd like to correct with the resin. Once cured in another few hours, I will be able to do a second pour to fill in the edges that didn't get enough resin and dome over the Glossy Accents that we put on them before the resin (which you can't see anymore, btw) That will really make these extra special.

Here's how they are now.....

The Resin paper wasn't quite cured either but I was able to cut it out so you can see the effect. So precious. See, easy peasy to create and now I have instant resin petals or leaves -- maybe even some angel wings! You never know where they're turn up.

If you didn't get a chance to see last night's broadcast and would like to watch me create these... Here's you are! The first video is making the backgrounds and stamping the images and the second is mixing and pouring the resin. It was a 3 hour evening so feel free to have this on while creating in your own studio .. or watch in bits and pieces. :) As always, if you have any questions about what you've seen here -please contact me at the studio. Getting things ready for our Scrapbooking Retreat at the Nottawasaga Resort in Alliston on Feb 25-27! I'm looking forward to hosting the croppers there for a "Flappin' Scrappin'" good time! *smile*

Buntings 2 Ways - USTREAM recap

Hello all...

Thank you for joining me last night on USTREAM. It was an interesting one*smile*

I was creating buntings to hang in my studio window next month for Valentines and our Customer Appreciation Day (more to come on that). One was painted scraps of canvas. The other was crocheted. Yes, I did an impromptu crochet class on USTREAM last night. Who knew? *smile* I suppose you never quite know what will be on my desk on a Friday night in the studio.

Here are the pics.

This is how the canvas Hearts turned out.

LOVE that I decided to sew them with the sewing machine instead of hand stitching them. I think they look perfect! I will clip them to a string with a paperclip when I hang them in the window. See... I have already strung some baker's twine on a few to attach them with. Fabulous.

Here is the crocheted bunting.

I do like the orange chain that I will string the hearts with - it will be visible in my window in that colour. If I change it, it will be to a plum colour. We shall see! Loving me some crochet lately!

We had a great time in the studio last night creating styrofoam stamps and monoprinting papers and muslin and shrink plastic.

Here's what I did.... I made a flower stamp from the styrofoam plate, added some paint, stamped it on some shrink plastic, heated it with a heat gun and VOILA!!

Aren't they precious? So much fun!

Jen was here with her son today (He was felting some pocket warmers!) and when she saw them she said "Hey... those would be cool buttons!" Why yes, they would! hummmm... *smile* Might just have to do that! Thanks for the inspiration, Jen.

Technique of the Month - Styro Stamping...

creating your own stamps from Styrofoam Plates - the technique that I featured in the Winter issue of the Canadian Scrapbooker. CREATE ANY IMAGE.... No Need for trees! hehehe

Poppy Pillow 2

Sheri was in the studio when I created the first Poppy Pillow and absolutely loved it. So, I thought I'd make her one for Christmas.

We had our "Friends Christmas" last night and I gave it to her then. *smile*

This one, although a little hard to see, is made from a neutral coloured linen (not the muslin that I made mine from) Also different, I made this a pillow case (envelope style) and stuffed it with a prefab pillow form. Much nicer... hummmm... maybe I should have given her mine! *wink*

This time with wire....

I have a blue crochet and bead necklace that I love to wear that I purchased at the One of a Kind Show last year. I LOVE it ... and, when people stop to admire it, I am always asked if I made it. The answer is no BUT, I sure could and one day I will make another one for myself.

Well, here it is. I've been wanting a purple necklace and earring set for a while now and since I caught that crochet bug again I thought -- hey, why not *wink* Love how it turned out....

Felting USTREAM

I had a wonderful time felting LIVE on USTREAM and with Bonnie here in the studio last night. Thanks for joining me again!!

I LOVE the Needle Felted Pocket Warmers (Pictured left) I know I'll be using them this winter once the snow flies! And I'm sure 'the kid' will too!

The Soap felting was funny -- WOW did I ever have clean hands

after all was said and done! I felted another soap after the cameras were off and shockingly ... it went much better! LOL Go Figure! Oh well, the joys of joining me live and watching me create something outside of my crafting comfort zone! hehehe But it was fun!! I'm looking forward to using these. I'll let you know how they work out. I think out of the two pictured here... the green one will be the best. It looks like it felted together nicely. YAY!

Painting up a storm and a WONDERFUL evening

There wasn't a USTREAM broadcast yesterday (as I mentioned before) because I had full house last night here in the studio for a crafting Christmas Party. Such a nice time! Thank you girls for the fun and munchies ... mmmmm.... Loved having you here - as always!!!

Earlier in the day I had another couple of gals come in to create too! I kick myself for not taking a picture because Judy specifically came in to create one of those drippy crayon canvases that I tried earlier this month on USTREAM. So fun!! And it looked MARVELOUS! Have you tried that yet?

The above is what I created yesterday... I used a white latex masking liquid to draw a design and then painted painted painted with my Crafter's Workshop Stencils. Can you see them? I used My Whimsical Hearts and Vines, Julie Balzer's Chevrons & Punchinella and I used the center of the Trendy Bracket stencil too... humm... any more? ....Yes, just saw Daisy Cluster in there too! Talk about layering! I really like how this turned out. I think I need to experiment with this a little more too!! Oh the things that make me happy!

I had rolled, stamped and cut the clay earlier and left the pieces to dry for a few days and then pulled them out to play with last night...

I coloured them with lots of different products... here are the results...

AND I love the resin paper "leaf" I made too!! I know you'll see this is a future project. In fact, I know you'll see all of these again soon because they'll make great embellies!!

Christmas Tag Swapping....

This week I participated in a fabulous tag swap with some amazing women! Just take a look at these tags!! Each one as different as the person who created them.

There were 17 of us who got together for some fun and festive frivolity and tag trading. What a lovely time and a great way to get together with friends over the holidays. Thank you so much for including me this year ladies!

This is the tag that I created. Yes, the tag/project that got my crochet bug in full swing again! *smile*

I crocheted these fun little hearts out of Baker's Twine and attached them to the tags with masking tape and my home made washi tape! (Stamped some Tissue Paper and then ran it through my Xyron machine! Works like a charm!) Sewed the tag to some muslin and frayed the edges and all is good and "ready to gift"

PLEASE teach a class on how to crochet small hearts and flower embellishments using baker's twine (I'll share with you the project that inspired that tomorrow...) sooooo Yes, there is a class in the works. I'll post it here when I'm done and you can let me know when you'd like to come in and learn how to make them.

Yes, I will very freely tell you that this was directly inspired by something else I saw on Pinterest (LOVE that pinterest) so if you follow my boards, this will look very familiar (originally posted by L Kluver-- it's a Poppy Fields Pillow: by OutonaLimbDesign)! ..It's all good! Also good? The fact I christened my Felting Machine - Finally! Oh why, oh why, did I wait this long? LOVE needle felting and now I an see myself doing bigger projects too. Although I used my machine, you can easily do this with the clover needle felters -- the 5 Needle Felting Tool would be perfect!!

This will look Fabulous in my living room!! On the couch under my Poppy Field Painting. (hehehe) Might have to make another one!

Okay, Okay... I caved, They're too cute for words!

The Smash Books and accessories are stocked in the studio (and online) and in time for Christmas. I think these would make the BEST journaling gifts evah!

Scrapbookers and Card Makers and even those who make their own journaling books -- will love the accessories! There are so many ways to use them and they're a great price too!! Nothing wrong with that.

My Crayon Art....

Okay -- Now this was fun!

Thanks for joining me on USTREAM last night for a live broadcast of me trying this technique inspired by what I saw on Pinterest.

I did a crayon experiment -- which one melt better/what surface to use etc.... and then went to town! :) If you missed it and would like to see what I did (and how I did it, you an still see it on USTREAM by clicking this link:

This is the first one I did...... Hanging dude reminds me of the hubby...

And here's me and the dog.. LOL ... Okay, me in my mind *wink*. LOVE This one!

and... at the end of the broadcast I melted the ends of the crayons in a silicone mold. It worked great until I popped it out. ..then they crumbled. I bet I needed to make them thicker so that they'd pop out of that deep mold better. Live and learn! :)

And here's a Suitcase Update... I'm ready on one side to paint my "girl" on it :) check back again soon for another update...

I fell in LOVE with this on Pinterest. I'm not sure who originally "pinned them" (I would love to give them the credit) but I had to share. I'm totally inspired!! So inspired in fact that this is what I am planning to try tonight on my

I found myself on Lillian's blog this week -- and take a look at what I saw...

She posted a canvas that she create at the studio last month. Love it!!

Note all the Crafter's Workshop goodness ... and my personal favourite: my Whimsical Vines template! hehehehehe

I really wanted to show you these -- for two reasons. ONE - what a wonderful way to use stencils (to decorate crafting shirts). Here's one with my 6x6 Whimsical Vines stencil ... AND....

TWO -- because she used the Leaf Frame Template - one of the featured stencils in yesterday's Stencil Hop. Very "fitting"! *wink*

How fabulous is that?? Can't you picture yourself wearing one of these while you create? I'm thinking I might have to make one for myself -- might save on the clothing bills

Super exciting, isn't it? *smile*

Over the course of the last few weeks, many fabulous artists have shared their art and their love of Julie's wonderful stencils produced by Crafter's Workshop.

Those of us "hopping" this week were asked to create something with the LEAF FRAME and FLOWER FRAME - two stencils in Julie's 2011 release (click here to view the other stencils created by her).

Here's what I created.

A Mixed Media Quilted Shrine -- A framed gift for my mother this Christmas. (sure hope she doesn't decide to check out my blog today *smile*)

This piece will be very special as it includes some very personal things with special meaning -- and the leaf frame offered the perfect motif to tie it all together. Can you see all the places I used it? The background fabric (sprayed with Denim Colorwash Spray) , on some Graphic 45 paper (also with the spray) to frame the dancer, and for the nest--this time I inked the pattern onto a scrap piece of muslin with Coffee Archival Ink, coloured it with Weathered Wood Distress Ink and then quilted it. Makes me smile

This is my first shrine -- I've seen so many fabulous ones in books and magazines over the years and always wanted to do one. I thought I'd do my first for my mother representing the two people she loved the most but who are no longer with us - my father and my grandmother.

Here's how it will be special for her: The dancer in the shrine is my grandmother. The picture was taken in 1920. I scanned it, printed it on TAP (Transfer Artist Paper), ironed it on a piece of linen (an old hanke found in my grandmother's sewing box) and quilted it before attaching to the paper background. The lace and tatted doilies in the piece are also from my Nana's stash. And yes, my mom will recognize it!

The blue material is from one of my dad's old denim shirts. (he passed in January and I swear it still smells like him. So loved using it here.) The Eagle also represents him -- he loved Eagles and the strength they represent and has been a reoccurring image in our family's life.

"When the music changes, so does the dance". This will be our first Christmas without my dad -- we will definitely be dancing differently.... but that's okay, we'll still be dancing together! I hope she likes it.... and that you do too!!

On a completely different note... I took this opportunity to make something for my daughter -- Yes, every teenager needs an "all knowing" picture of her fabulous mother beside her bed! LOL

I recently had some new "head shots" done and jokingly told "the kid" that I was going to frame one for her for Christmas. After she rolled her eyes, she said "Sure mom, just make it fancy." Well, won't she be surprised!

I loved using this template to make texture on this canvas. I pressed some Light Molding Paste through the Flower Frame template and then let it dry before painting it with fluid acrylics and some glitter and pearl pens.

DID YOU NOTICE THE LEAVES? Yes, I created those using the Leaf Frame template. Some leaves I inked (with Archival Ink) and some I painted onto Shrink Plastic, cut and heated until they shrunk to size -- LOVE that! I'll be doing it again soon -- There are so many leaf making possibilities!

Okay ... Here's the story.

I was designing a little something for publication (eekk... I still can't believe I'm saying that! *wink*) and some fabulous, crafty people came in the studio and saw the finished product and wanted me to create a class based on it. Soooooooooooooooooooo... Here's the class:

Envelope Love - 2 hours
This class will be offered in the studio until the end of the year (or until I sell out of canvas envelopes). $20 - when you have your own Kanzashi Flower Template, $25 without (that's a discount to purchase the template reg $6.75). All other supplies are included.

Learn how to paint canvas products, create a resist with acrylic paint & water with your favourite Crafter's Workshop Template, create a Kanzashi Flower fabric embellishment and your own crocheted trim from Twinery Baker's Twine. YES, I said crochet ... and trust me - if I can, you can! Beginners are welcome. There are only two rows of crochet in this. It can be done and you'll love yourself for the accomplishment!

The envelope is 5"x7" - perfect size for gifting photos and even gift certificates this holiday season. ..just sayin *smile* . See you in the studio soon.

You never know what I'm going to do on a Friday night in the studio. Last night I created this canvas using the toilet paper molds from last week's broadcast to create texture on the piece. I like how it turned out in the end. THANKS GIRLS..... I'm off to make something else with the image. and play a little more -- okay .... after I get some work done. *smile*

Canadian Scrapbooker Winter 2011 - Feature Video

I am thrilled to say that the Winter Issue of the Canadian Scrapbooker has shipped and stores and subscribers will be receiving their issues shortly.

I hope you enjoy my first ever article with them - A Scrapbooker's Gift!

I won't say to much more about the article yet ... at least until I have it in my hot little hands -- BUT I will say that every issue will also include a link to a special project video based on the technique that I share in the magazine. I think that's pretty cool.

This is the first video. SO, grab a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy. We'll be taking the "Create your own Styrofoam Stamp" technique (that is stepped out in the magazine) a little farther for you ladies and gents who are interested in mixing media. In this video I will show you how to stamp with your styrofoam stamp on muslin and then embellish it with needle felting and free-form stitching to create a fabulous applique image to place on a custom fabric book cover. Phew! That's a lot but I think you'll like!

Without further ado.... "Quiet on the set....... ACTION!"

I had a WONDERFUL evening last night with the "journaling girls"!

We had so much fun playing with gelatos and watercolours and paints and inks.... well.... lets just say - WE HAD FUN CREATING!

I did step outside my journal for a bit last night and created this "tag - sized" Christmas Mona Lisa. You like? It's layers of paints and ink with a little bit of Perfect Pearl Mist. I LOVE IT! The Mona stamp is one of the La Blanche collage stamps. I used green painters tape to mask off the areas of the stamp I did't want to use. Love doing that! And the Christmas Tree on her head? That was one of Leanne's great ideas..... I made a triangle stencil and stamped snowflakes in it, removed the stencil and stamped outside the edges to make it look a little less perfectly triangled. How'd I do? *smile*

Hi everyone... THANK YOU to those who came online yesterday to join my USTREAM feed. So fun to "play" with you and I hope you enjoyed it! I hope you come back and join me next Friday Night at 6:30 and LOG IN to chat so we can "talk" as we play -- you can ask questions, make commennts, etc etc :)

I played with a couple of ideas from Pam Carriker's Book - Art at the Speed of Life. I really liked the two small canvases that I created using her "Care Free Paint-Over Technique". Not so sure of the "paint under" technique though -- might not be for me -- just another "floportunity" ...to use my gesso! *wink* LOL

I did love our Toilet Paper Mold experiment... Here are the results I promised.

Using Pam's directions (details found in her book) I mixed some matte medium and water into a spray bottle and made toilet paper molds by layering sheets of TP over a rubber stamps and spraying the mixture as I went..... we tried this VERY SUCCESSFULLY with the TP but then also got inspired to try it with other fine papers.... Paper Towel and Dress Pattern Tissue. Here are the results:

Love the TP one. You can see the detail and I can't wait to use it on a future project. The Paper Towel one (which I also spritzed blue to see how it would come through) was too thick to really get into the crevasses of the stamp but you can sort of see the effect. And the Pattern Tissue -- NOPE! But it's cute *wink*
Here are the other TP ones we did. Sorry for the photo but I'm sure you can see that they all look great! THANKS PAM!! hehe

Today is a day to remember and to honour and I hope you all take a minute to do just that!

I mentioned a little while ago on our facebook page that I created a little something to post today. Well, here it is: "Lest We Forget" a mixed media painting that I created with the image of my daughter (Sea Cadet, MS Ellis -- yes, that's her wearing the "white top" in the middle) standing vigil at the Waterloo Cenotaph on Nov 11, 2010. She was back there last night and today standing vigil with her fellow cadets and had the honour of being the Sea Cadet representative that escorted the wreath bearers during the service. How wonderful. I'm so proud of her.

My Pilot Pen Rep was in here today and she showed me something that I think will make your heart sing! .... a ball type pen that will write on fabric (and canvas ... I tried) that will disappear when you heat it with an iron or even a heat gun!!

I can't wait to play with it! I so see myself designing something on a piece of canvas and painting (or whatever) over it and then taking the heat gun to it to remove any lines I didn't go over. OMG!! Yahoo!!!

I had a great weekend with some fabulous crafty people!!

Friday night was spent with a giggly group of gals creating in the studio and skyping with another crafty friend from Alberta. Saturday I was treated to some more crafty time with another group of amazing gals and THEN I had the opportunity to go into Toronto to meet up with the Canadian Scrapbooker team and work at the CreativFestival on Sunday. Pretty GREAT weekend if you ask me!!

It was wonderful to see so many people I knew at the show. One of those people was Keitha. We had a great chat and she told me about a Halloween project she created this week -- a Halloween Configurations Box. Take a look at this!!

I had a wonderful time at ScrapFest this weekend! Thank you to my daughter Emily, Sue and Paula Phillips (journal artista) for helping me in the booth and making the weekend go so well.

I have a GREAT reason to NEED a new "mug shot"!!

I will be starting my new gig as a contributing writer for the Canadian Scrapbooker magazine in the Winter 2011 issue (on shelves at the end of November) YAY!! I'm so excited! My section is called "A Scrapbooker's Gift" and will be a series of articles dedicated to creating gifts (for ourselves and others) using stuff from our crafting stash. What fun! I hope you like!!

I really wish I could get a good pic of this for you BUT here it is nevertheless. :)

This is the Candy Necklace that I made for my costume that I wore last week in Toronto. Yes, if's real candy -- Bubble Gun Tape and Jolly Rancher Gummies. that I strung and attached to a chain. To keep it from going bad or getting sugar bits on me all night, I glazed it with some Resin to protect it. Love how it turned out!!

NEW FELTING CLASSES

I am so please to have Manuela (a fabulous local needle felting instructor) come to the studio to offer some classes this fall!! Here's the "deets"

Then we will felt the basic shapes for fruit (balls) or pumpkins (balls with stems), These raw shapes will be refined and covered using the felting needle in the following classes (either Oct 6 or Oct 20) Class fees include supplies and use of tools.

Thursday October 6 OR Thursday October 20 (7 pm -8:30 pm) Cost $24

This needle felting class is dedicated to fall decoration. Beginner and new participants start needle felting with cookie cutters (leaves or pumpkin shapes) after that, we will cover previously wet felted shapes turning them into fruit or pumpkins (for those unable to attend the wet felting class, some shapes will be available for purchase). For the pumpkins, we'll also make a Halloween costume! Class fee includes supplies and use of tools.

PARENT/CHILD CLASS

Friday October 7 (6:30pm - 8 pm)

Cost $24 for Parent and Child, $14 for additional child

In the parent-child class,, Manuela will give a short introduction into two techniques, wet felting and needle felting with fun Halloween colours and shapes. You will wet felt a spooky soap. Using cookie colours you will needle felt ghosts, bats or jack-o-lanterns. This is fun for boys and girls! Class fees include supplies and use of tools

Last week I was thrilled to have a few gals come to the studio to play with paints and mediums.

They took my 'Texture Canvas Workshop" and had a great time creating texture with foam stamps, molding paste, paint and NAPKINS. I thoroughly enjoy seeing what people create with the same tools and techniques. The results are as unique as they are and I couldn't be more thrilled.

They're fabulous! See.......

The picture above is almost finished. The artist took it home to add Dried Flowers to it - can't wait to see the final project!

I've been busy receiving stamps this week for our first USED STAMP SALE . There are some great items coming in!! I can't wait!!

If you have some stamps that you would like to sell in the sale, please contact me asap so that I know that you'll be bringing stamps in. I require all stamps to be in by Thursday so I can set up and have everything ready in time for Saturday's sale. Stamps can be Wood, Cling Mounted or Acrylic. Stamping supplies are also welcome (inks, blocks, cards, powders)

So -- mark your calendars -- Saturday Sept 17th at 10am until close of the last stamp set is sold.

We all have stamps hanging around our creative spaces that we have loved but don't use any more. If you'd like to sell your stamps in our sale... here is how:

Contact me at the studio (519 954 6620) to let me know you are interested and I will send you a Stamp Sale "agreement", and a set of labels with an account number that you can fill out and bring to the studio with your stamps. A $5 Submission Fee is in place. This is a one time fee that will cover the costs of our sale and is good for 1 stamp or 100 and is required when you bring your stamps in. *smile*

After the sale, you will received 100% of your proceeds in the form of a Gift Certificate to the Art House Studio that you can use for new stamps, other products, studio time or even an in-house class. Sound good?

I'm having a little trouble with my camera so I will see what I can do to take a photo and share it with you all..... until then -- those in the area will just have to come by and see for yourself!!

The Art House Studio is Closed until at least

Friday August 12

for Renovations!! I am taking out a wall in the studio to make a larger, open, more creative studio space. YAY!

The floors in the studio are being done and will require varnishing. Due to the fumes involved in the sealing process, the official re-open date may change so please watch for news of the reno on the blog and on our FaceBook Page.

While at CHA I was thrilled to be able to spend some time with my friend Susan Weckesser.

For those of you who don't know -- Susan is a fabulous designer, photographer, writer and artist from Alberta. She owns her own company called - Susiebee Designs and is a regular contributing writer for the Canadian Scrapbooker

Susan was one of the selected artists to participate in CHA's Crafty Couture showcase -- Love her dress!!! :)
It was so wonderful to see it there displayed as part of this fabulous exhibit. Congrats Susan.

I am proud to sell Susan's paper line (printed on heavy paper that is mixed media and "spritz" friendly) in the studio.... Fabulous!!!!

Meet Julie Balzer -- fabulous artist right up my colour ally! :) hehe

CHA had a Mixed Media "Couture" display at the show where a few designers showcased they're crafty designs -- LOVE Julie's entry -- ALL of the entries were fabulous (more later)

Julie has a new line of Crafter's Workshop templates that were launched at the show. Below are a few of her's and some other new releases that I'm getting in the studio soon!!

Yes that would be me and the ever sweet Claudine Hellmuth and Candie Cooper! The photo was taken last week at CHA Summer. Love these gals. They're both as super kind as they are talented!!

Claudine is launching some fun stuff at CHA -- All her studio paints and mediums are going to be available in "try me" collection packs. OMG.... you know how much I love her "Studio Line" and that I need more like a gallon of her paints and mediums to use in my own artwork. Well, now it is super accessible to everyone .... even the "try me" painters out there *smile* AND the little bottles they come in help make perfect little paint dots. heheheheh... Love that!! Can't WAIT to get them in! I have some fun technique ideas that I will be using them with and I hope you like! *smile*

She is also launching a NEW BLACK GESSO that she tells me will also double for a chalkboard paint!! How cool is that!!!!!

Candie is a fabulous talent --- she has authored a couple of fun books. One on felted jewelry and the other with wire and metal jewelry that is just coming out.

I'd like to get her here to teach a few classes one weekend this fall... anyone interested? *smile*

Today is a big day for my family.

Right now, I am heading to Uxbridge, ON because this weekend the Durham Highland Games is dedicating the Heavy Events Competition in honour of my father who passed away earlier this year. My dad was part of Highland Games all over Canada and the US for 45 years (for the past 33 years I have worked along side him) SO.... this may get emotional. :)

See the necklace I'm wearing? I made this out of one of my dad's old Nova Scotia Tartan ties (our tartan) and adorned the centre of the flower with one of his heavy events pewter pins (in this case a weight for distance thrower). There are a couple of chains there even though they are a little hard to see.... but I think you get the idea.

How'd I make the flower ? You'll have to wait and see :)

After the dedication, Kevin and I are off to Barrie as my sister is getting married today too! Seeeeeee!!! Told you it was quite the day :) I wish her and her new hubby, Mark, every happiness.

See you all back in the studio soon. I have LOTS to do -- if you see lights on when you drive by the studio before Wednesday, drop on by.... I'm there working :)

Don't fall in love with your backgrounds.....

That's what I keep reminding myself and my students when we layer paint to create textural backgrounds.... AND ... just let it evolve.

Remember the background that I made with Janine last week (in the video)? Well, this is what I did with it after seeing Lisa Ferrante's (LOVE her work by the way...) article in the current issue of Somerset Studio that finally arrived last Thursday. Recognize it? yep -- Loved that painting and I just had to make one for myself and that background we made was PERFECT!! Note... I still added that crazy bird I've been dreaming about :) It was just used in a different way. It evolved thanks to the inspiration.

I LOVE the Somerset Magazines for inspiration. There are a couple of projects that I'd like to try in the current issue... hummmm... what to do next? :)

Technique of the Month - Resin!

Okay -- I'm here at the studio today getting ready for tomorrow night's Technique of the Month "Meeting" and I can happily verify that we will be creating Resin Embellies for card making or other paper crafts.

We are doing this as I have been asked many times about resin and, although I am no expert, I am happy to share my knowledge of mixing and the ins and outs of the medium.... perhaps that can be better said as "my trials and errors" LOL

Anyway - if you are interested in a basic crash course on how to mix and use resin -- come on by. This is not something for people who have worked with it before. It's meant as a little kick in the pants class to get you to use and experiment with this stuff .... CAUSE I KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE IT!
